Hello Lindy Bombers! There are a couple of things that you should ALL know, so I'm giving these announcements their very own post.
ANNOUNCEMENT THE FIRST: There will be NO CLASSES on Monday, December 27th. Come on out to Swingin' Sunday the day before and get all your dancing in, because the Lindy Bombers are taking the week off!
ANNOUNCEMENT THE SECOND: The FIRST EVER open tryouts for the competitive Lindy Bombers Team will be held Monday, March 7th, 2011. If you are interested in trying out, we suggest that you spend a lot of time working on your technique and getting comfortable dancing fast. Fast, good swingouts will be something we look for in new members. Feel free to talk to any current team members if you have questions about the team, or refer to our website's Team page. I hope to see a lot people at tryouts!

Lesson Recap 12/20/10
Last night was OPEN FLOOR NIGHT which meant many of us spent some quality time working on new moves or technique weakenesses. Evan also did a review of the solor Charleston routine, a video of which can be found in last week's lesson recap post. Evan was perpared to move on to some new material, but unfortunately we ran short on time. Maybe on the next open floor night!
The team spent a SOLID practice brushing up on our solo movement and partner dancing technique. All this in preparation for our next performance, at the Heartland Swing Festival in Iowa next year. More on that to come. . .
Megan taught an hour of FUN-damentals while team practice was going on, and I spied not one, but TWO new students in her class. Let's hope they keep coming back!
I'm about to post some announcements that pertain to ALL Lindy Bombers, so don't go away!

Lesson Recap 12/6/10
Last night was very technique-focused, which was a change from our recent routine. We started the 7:30 practice with turn drills and bounce drills (YAY BOUNCE DRILLS). Then we worked on some siwngout fundamentals that were new to some and familiar to others. We had the leads keep their left arms short through counts 5&6, already beginning to establish the connection necessary to stretch anywhere from 7-3. We also worked on varying the amount each partner travels in a swingout, from having the lead more or less circle the follow to a normal, shared-momentum swingout. For the ladies, we worked on the "energizer bunny concept" that says you should continue to move in the direction you were last lead until you are stopped by the next lead. We practiced this by having the leads alternate swingouts and 6ct passes in unpredictable patterns.
During team practice, we ran our routine over and over. It's that time; only a couple of weeks left until we perform!

Lesson Recap 11/29/2010
Monday's 7:30 lesson was a combined beginner/intermediate tour of moves that start and end in closed position. We started out with Jig Walks, then did some little pop outs that can travel in either direction or become rotational. We did some little hops in closed, which of course made my night, as it involved jumping around. We did a Balboa break that works well from closed position in any swing dance.
We also did a 6-ct inside turn from closed that "landed" us face-to-face, but offset, from our partners. In this sort of ballroom-like position, we can walk around or do the bird or any other manner of silly things. We used a HIP LEAD (capitalized because it is one of my favorite things ever) to get ourselves back into normal closed position.
Hope that jogs your memory, if you were trying to remember what we covered. See you next time!

Lesson Recap 11/22
For an exciting change of pace, Oscar and Samantha taught on Monday and worked with the whole group on our slow dancing technique. We focused hard on connection and natural movement, and learned a sequence of moves. I for one LOVE slow dancing (and/or blues, whatever) so I had a great time.
The team worked on our routine for the 19th. . . and that's about it! We have a lot to do between now and then!

INTENSIVE Recap!
Hello Lindy Bombers!
This past weekend, a few of us die-hard Lindy Hoppers attended an Intensive workshop with Nick Williams and Nina Gilkenson. This has been a dream of ours for several months, and it was fantastic to finally have it come true! If you were at the workshop, you might want to bookmark this blog entry, because I'm going to embed video recaps of the classes.
If you WEREN'T at the workshop, feast your eyes on some great dancing anyway!
Also, (THANK YOU RYAN FOR THE VIDEO!) Nick & Nina did an impromptu demo at the Saturday dance:
Thank you to Nick and Nina for teaching, Evan and Oscar for organizing, and everyone who came out to dance!

Lesson Recap 11/8/10
Last night was great, so thank you to everyone who came out!
During the first hour, Evan brought us some fun new Lindy Hop moves. We started out with a swingout that turned into a duck-under for the leads (under their own right arm) ending in either open or closed. We also did 8-ct Lindy footwork with a Bal-Swing shape to it instead of a typical swingout or Lindy circle. In that context, we worked on a free spin and a texas tommy. We also did a new turn from cross hand that had TWO, count them TWO tucks, orchestrated by the cross hand connection and the lead's left hand on the follow's right elbow. Last, but certainly not least, we did a move that starts out like a basket and turns into one of my favorite things: A HIP LEAD! Lead get's his R hand on follow's R hip by count 4, also his L hand on her L shoulder. Changes her direction around count 5 and spins her out 6-8. I really liked that one, if you can't tell!
Team practice was productive last night as we plowed through some new choreography which you will get to SEE on Sunday, Dec. 19th if you come to Harry Reese. It's looking good so far, I can imagine that it will be awesome by then! We worked on aerials too, including, to my great satisfaction, some same-sex aerials we're saving for a rainy day.
See you on the dance floor!

WORKSHOP RECAP!
Hello Lindy Hoppers!
We have had two great workshops recently! I attended both of them, and am here to let you know what went down.
Oscar and Ashley taught a total body movement workshop on October 30th. Some of the major focus points of the day included:
- Using your body's natural way of moving when you're dancing. (For example, you never swing your right arm forward as you walk forward on your right foot. No need for that on the dance floor either.)
- Leading/following with your whole body. We may only be connected through our hands or arms, but moving with our whole bodies is what makes that connection work!
There was a LOT of technique to be learned at this workshop, and those of us who went definitely came away with plenty of things to work on!
Evan and Sonya taught an Intro to Lindy Hop workshop this morning. HUGE THANK YOUs to our newcomers Sarah, Tori, and Amanda (Amanda I know you're not REALLY new but thank you just the same!). We had a handful of beginners and a handful of more experienced dancers to help them out, and I think it was a great event. Hopefully these workshops will help grow our community.

Lesson Recap 11/1/10
Hello Lindy Bombers!
Last night's practice was AWESOME! (OK, maybe I just think that because I helped teach. . .)
During the first hour, Phil and I taught one of our favorite dances: BAL-SWING! We focused a lot on connecting to your partner using counter-balance techniques. We reviewed the Bal-swing basic and did some side-walks. (Haha side-walks. Like sidewalks. Get it?) We also did some Maxie Swivels, and I have no idea where that name comes from or if I spelled it right.
The second hour featured none other than the amazing Megan Pfieffer, dancer extraordinaire and front-woman of the Wash Tub Floozies, teaching with Adam. I don't know what they taught, but if she reads this post, maybe she'll comment and let us know.
The team (sans Oscar, Evan, and Ellen) worked on the Big Apple, jam circle choreography, and aerials. I am proud to report that we have had our first successful girl-on-girl aerial. Stay tuned for more!

Lesson Recap 10/25
This week we spent the first hour learning some NEW CHARLESTON MOVES! I love Charleston, so I thought it was fantastic. Quick reminder if you forget what we did already: We learned a common way to get from side-by-side into tandem ("the chase") and followed that up with a sequence to get into hand-to-hand Charleston. We experimented with "missed" (either intentional or not) connections in this position and how to keep dancing through them, and also with a subtle down-lead to change the look of the hand-to-hand basic. We also learned an exit that involved the leads kicking twice on the same side, and I could show it to you if I had to, but I can't describe how it's done. VIDEO CAMERA ANYONE?
The Team did their Teamy things. . . and GUESS WHAT! We're performing our next routine in our "home court," the Harry Reese Dance Studio, on December 19th! That's the week after the Christmas party. Don't miss it, I hear it's going to be awesome!
Stay tuned, I'm about to post a video I found on YouTube at work today. . .

Lesson Recap 10/18/10
Another open floor night was upon us this week, and it looked like plenty of dancers made good use of it! Evan offered a quick intro-to-Balboa to interested people while social dancing happened throughout the first hour. I missed the Bal lesson, but I'm betting he covered the basic, a come-around, and something else. (To be fair, I participated for a few minutes as a lead, and so I KNOW he did most of that. Then teh ratio evened out so I went to practice some Lindy.)
During the 2nd hour, Elaine continued her month's work of Al & Leon Shim Sham in the lobby. The team practiced our usual stuff, and we also listened to the song we're going to use for our CHRISTMAS ROUTINE! That's right Wichita, be prepared to have your socks rocked of by a team performance some Sunday during December. Stay tuned for details. It will be awesome.

Lesson Recap 10/11/10
Last night we combined forces during the first hour to learn about some original choreography by Evan. It was a good opportunity to test our ability to pick up simple choreography, as well as a chance to work on our skills as performers, not just dance partners.
During team practice, we worked on technique for jam-circle situations, aerials, and the Big Apple.
Don't forget that Oscar and Ashley are doing a workshop on the 30th of this month, and Evan and Sonya are doing a beginner workshop on Saturday, Nov. 6th!

Lesson Recap 10/4/10
Hello Dancers!
We had a solid technique lesson last night. Beginners and intermediate dancers combined during the first hour for an intense focus on swingouts. Evan slowly increased the speed of the music as we all did our best to maintain decent technique in the face of rising panic and fatigue. It was a panting, sweaty mess by the end of the lesson. And, just to be clear, I think that's awesome! :-) Congrats to everyone who made it through the hour, and special thanks to Amanda and Cassie for showing up for the first time! (Or in Cassie's case maybe just the first time in a long time)
During the 2nd hour, Elaine started working with the group on the Al & Leon Shim Sham.
The Team worked some more on original choreography, aerials, and the Big Apple routine.
In spite of a successful workshop last weekend, the Lindy Bombers didn't quite have the cash to pay their bills (rent and insurance) this month. If you're behind in paying for lessons, please get caught up ASAP. Also, don't forget to PROMOTE this group on Sunday nights. The more people we have, the more stuff we can do!
Until next time, keep dancing!

Lindy Bombers Workshop 10/3/2010
THANK YOU to everyone who made it out to our workshop on Saturday! Attendance was good enough to pay for the event and then some, which is great. If you missed out this time, stay tuned for news on the next one.
If you've never been to one of our workshops, you've missed some opportunities to learn moves and styling variations that we don't cover in regular lessons. We usually have them on Saturdays from 10am-1pm, and everyone is welcome. So come on out next time and have fun with us!

Lesson Recap
Hey Dancers!
Sorry for the delay in posting lesson recaps, and sorry another time because I really don't remember what we did two weeks ago.
Let's see. . . it was September 19th, so a lot of us had just gotten back from Omaha for the Cowtown Jamborama. . . Oh yes! I think it was a Balboa/Bal-Swing day! The beginning and intermediate classes combined for the first hour to do some fun moves, brought to us by Evan. We spent some time reviewing the basics for our newcomers, and also worked on some new moves. The only thing I can remember is a move that involved the follow getting wrapped up and then unwound into a stretch. . . you remember what I'm talking about if you were there. . . but the details are lost forever. If only we had that damn video camera we keep meaning to buy, this wouldn't happen!
Last week (the 26th) we worked some cool Charleston footwork variations, not-so-subtly borrowed from Andrew and Karen's Charlestinnovation class at Cowtown. Quick recap: From Tandem, you can lead a "waterfall" into two different ad lib footwork variations. The first one feels like a rock-step cross, rock-step cross and the second one is more like the version of falling off the log that David and Kim taught in their Shag class at Sunflower Swing. Don't remember? Guess you shoulda been there! (Not really. Ask me, Evan, or anyone who looks like they know what they're doing if you have questions).
The Team practiced their usual material during both weeks, with the exciting addition of Aerials Practice Time! This froggy little blogger couldn't be happier about it. We've been working on the Frankie (also known as: The Helicopter, The Lamp Post, The Lindy Flip, and goodness knows what else), The Knickerbocker (both halves - front flip and back), and another one that we all have a name for and that name is something I don't know if we want to be writing in the blog. You can see Austin and Ashley doing it in the routine performance video from last Christmas.
The Taster class was Blues last month, courtesy of the lovely Megan Pfieffer. This month, Elaine Pischnotti (sorry if that's spelled wrong Elaine) will take over to teach a different version of the Shim Sham, so be ready for some fun solo jazz!

Lesson Recap
Hello Dancers!
We had a great combined beginner/intermediate class last night in Balboa/Bal-Swing, one of my favorite subjects! Highlights included a review of basic technique, a review/introduction of the come-around, and then a shiny new move. The new move, for those of you who are trying to remember details, starts with a come-around that opens into a two-handed open connection, winds around into something like a sweetheart, then spins the follow back out into open. We finished it off with a very common Bal catch that feels similar to a come-around where both partners "swirl" together.
The 2nd class split up into Blues with Megan and Sonya (feel free to comment with recaps, either of you ladies!) and team practice. We worked on aerials in the team practice, so I was one very happy follow!
Stay tuned for details about our upcoming fundraiser and workshop!

Lesson Recaps!
You've been missing out if you haven't been at practice lately; we've been having a great time and the group is growing!
8/30 - Evan taught some cool cross-hand moves in the Intermediate class, but I can't give you details, because I was with the beginners! We did plenty of nutritious foundation technique work and introduced a move called a crash.
In the 2nd class the team worked as usual on technique, the Big Apple, and original choreography.
Megan finished up her solo jazz class during the taster hour, and announced BLUES for September.
9/6 - Thanks to everyone who made it out on the holiday! We combined beginning/intermediate classes to work on technique for a specific kind of swingout. Evan stressed using stretch on count 1 instead of an immediate forward lead. He also spent time explaining how to keep your own movement (as a lead) linear during each swingout, moving forward from 2-5, and back the way you came from 6-1.
Megan started her Blues class during the 2nd class, while the team kept on keepin' on with the same items from the previous week.
Don't forget there are TWO great opportunities to travel this month: The Cowtown Jamborama in Omaha, NE in two weeks and Southern Fried Swing in Arkansas in three. Look forward to local workshops by Evan and Oscar in October, too!
Cheers!

Lesson Recap
Oh my, it looks like nobody's been updating the blog! Well let me see. . . I was out of town on Monday the 9th, but I'm sure class was fantastic as usual. The 15th was open floor night, followed by Megan's solo jazz and team practice. (Not sure what happened in Megan's class, but in team practice, we worked on learning The Big Apple, did some mens' & womens' technique, speed training, and then a little choreography from Phil)
Yesterday, while Sonya taught the beginners' class, the intermediate class worked on some moves for closed position. We started out with Jig Walks, then moved on to "The Ryan" (or was that "The Todd"?), which is a tuck prep into a double turn where the lead stays with the follow as she travels to gather her back into closed on 7-8. Finally, we did two versions of an Eagle Slide from side-by-side: one out of a kick-ball-change on each partner's outside foot, and one out of a grapevine on and-3-and-4.
I'm sure Megan did something awesome with solo jazz during the 2nd hour, and the team continued with speed training, the Big Apple, and original choreography. We also worked on competition strategy and how to make the most of your dance time during spotlights.
Don't forget there are two out-of-town events coming up next month! Cowtown Jamborama is the 16th-19th of September in Omaha, Nebraska and Southern Fried Swing is the following weekend, the 24th-26th, in Fort Smith, Arkansas.

Don't forget there are two out-of-town events coming up next month! Cowtown Jamborama is the 16th-19th of September in Omaha, Nebraska and Southern Fried Swing is the following weekend, the 24th-26th, in Fort Smith, Arkansas.

Weekly Recap
Hello Lindy Bombers!
Our first lesson of August, along with the format changes, went off without a hitch on Monday. Oscar took the beginners and taught them some essential Lindy Hop basics, while Evan taught footwork variations to the intermediate class. The variations were: Scissor kicks, scissor LEGS, kick-outs for the follows, and all-triple-step swingouts for the leads. (Comment if there were more - that's all I can remember hearing from the other side of the partition.)
The first team practice ran from 8:30-10:00, and it was great! Meanwhile, on the other side of the gym, Megan taught what I can only assume was an awesome solo jazz class. (MEGAN - Feel free to put a lesson recap in the comment section of this entry, I'd love to know what you did!)
Until next time, have fun! See you on the dance floor!

Upcoming Format Changes
Fellow Lindy Bombers, I apologize. I'm sorry there hasn't been a lesson recap since June, or even a YouTube video to keep you entertained. I have let the blog lapse, and I am ashamed.
But I'm BACK! Am I going to search my memory and dredge up an entire month's worth of lessons? No. But, I am going to let you all know about some upcoming format changes to Monday night lessons, let you know about TUESDAY night lessons, and then make some updates to the rest of the site. Enjoy!
FIRST UP: Format Changes
If you haven't been in class for a few weeks, you may not have heard about this. Our long-time format is, as of last night, a thing of the past. Don't panic just yet.
The first hour of every Monday will not be affected by the change, so if you've been attending the 7:30 class, keep coming! Evan, Oscar, and a handful of other teachers will continue to give great Lindy Hop lessons.
The SECOND hour, formerly known as the advanced lesson, will now be a team practice, and will last 90 minutes (from 8:30-10:00). Members of the team already know who they are, and they'll be practicing to represent Wichita in performances and competitions at out-of-town events. If you're interested in joining the team someday, keep practicing! Audition information will be announced at a later date.
If you're NOT interested in being on the team, or if you're unable to participate, but still want to continue your dance education, FEAR NOT! The 8:30-9:30 hour will STILL be available for your practicing needs! If you have a lesson you'd like to give during that time slot, let Evan know and he will get you set up to teach. Next Monday, Megan will be doing an undoubtedly awesome lesson on solo moves for your Lindy Hop. I personally think it would be great if everyone stayed for the 2nd hour - it won't cost you extra, and you'll get twice the material to work with!
For more details about Monday night format, more information about the team, and more of my delightful and entertaining writing style, visit the new "What We Do" link on the home page.
SECOND: Tuesday Night Lessons
Starting a week from today, there will be a local opportunity to take MORE Lindy Hop lessons, on TUESDAY nights! Read all about it here, and here are the quick facts:
- Oscar will be teaching a Lindy Hop class at 7:00pm at Old Town Ballroom every Tuesday. Cost of the class is $5.
- On the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of each month, the class will be followed by a short intro-to-swing class for beginners, and then an open dance until sometime late in the evening. The intro class is free. The dance is $6, or $4 if you attended that night's Lindy Hop class.
- It's gonna be awesome!

Lesson Recap - June 21st
Hello dancers!
Thanks to all of you who came out to open floor night last night! I thought it went unusually well. I saw everyone working on technique and moves, and there was enough mixing of partners to allow some of our newer dancers a chance to learn from the more experienced ones. That's good stuff. And SPEAKING of new dancers, we've had a recent influx of them, which is awesome!
During the 2nd class, we worked on bal swing, which is a mixture of Balboa and, obviously, swing. After discussing some of the theory behind what makes bal-swing work (rotational momentum as opposed to the linear we use in lindy, for one) we did 3 versions of a throw-out: one with a left-to-right connection, one with a right-right, and another left-to-right one where the lead turns away from the follow during counts 8-3. After those, we worked on some Peter Loggins-style bal-swing basics. A rock-step-step, rock-step-step pattern is pretty adaptable for a lot of swing moves and we played with that. At the last minute, we also worked on a Texas Tommy version of a throw-out.
On a personal note, I ADORE bal-swing and I hope everyone who was there last night can put it into practice a little more. It's fun, relatively simple, versatile, and doesn't make you look like a tool. What could be better?
Here's a video, from me to you, of some bal swing from Seattle Balboa Swing Festival of 2008:

Event Recap - The Rhythm is Jumpin'
In the spirit of "better late than never," I'm finally writing a recap of TRIJ.
This was an AWESOME almost-local event, and the Lindy Bombers represented Wichita well. The event took place in Kansas City and featured three dances (Friday, Saturday, and Sunday) two full days of classes (Saturday and Sunday) and a handful of competitions and group performances. The list of instructors included the world-famous Max Petruzella and Annie Trudeau, Mike Roberts and Laura Glaess, Jason Zabinski and Stacia Martin, Oscar Hampton, and Chelsea Rodgers. Here's a video of the instrictors' jam, including everyone but Chelsea.
I had a GREAT time and I'm sure my fellow Wichita dancers did too! We had a few dancers make finals in the competitions, and everyone did a great job in the classes.
On a related note, event organizer/instructor Oscar Hampton is now IN WICHITA! You might remember him from class last night; he was the skinny black guy hovering in the background and occasionally making faces. For the foreseeable future, Oscar is splitting his time and efforts between the Wichita and Kansas City dance scenes. This is a great opportunity for us to work with a very talented dancer who hasn't spent the whole of his dance career in Wichita. I highly recommend learning all you can from him.

Lesson Recaps - June 7th and June 14th
June 7th -
The beginner class worked on basics with Sonya while the intermediate class worked on strengthening technique in swingouts and lindy circles.
The Advanced class worked on some Charleston, including a move Evan saw Max and Annie do at The Rhythm is Jumpin'. It was awesome and it's one of my new favorite moves!
June 14th -
Beginners separated out from the intermediate class to work on foundation material. The intermediate class worked on one of my personal favorites, double turns! We all combined at the end for some tread milling.
The Advanced class continued working on some Max and Annie inspired Charleston moves, including getting the follow in a sort of Sweetheart position and doing the men's footwork, moving her either behind or in front of the lead's right arm, and doing Susie Qs or bal-like cross steps from any of those positions.

Lesson Recap - May 31
Hello Lindy Hoppers!
Thanks to all of you who came to class last night, even though it was a holiday! (And thanks to Evan and Ellen for sacrificing their holiday evening so Evan could teach!)
BEGINNER/INTERMEDIATE - We combined everyone for the first hour and worked on different styles of musicality. It was awesome! Musicality is how you bring your own personality into your dancing and make your dances memorable. We experimented with changing footwork, dancing "big" and dancing "small," and my personal favorite, focusing on communicating with your partner through your dancing. Incorporating any or all of these techniques is an important part of taking your dancing from technically proficient to actually being entertaining to watch.
ADVANCED - We had a show-and-tell day, which I thought was very cool. Each of the 6 dancers in class for the 2nd hour presented a move or footwork variation for the others to learn. It was nice to see what everyone else is working on, and also a good chance to practice teaching, which not all of us do regularly.
It's not too late to register for The Rhythm Is Jumpin', a Lindy Hop event that's happening in Kansas City this weekend! If you've never been to an out-of-town event, I strongly recommend this one for your first. It's a fun size, lots of local dancers will be there, and you'll have a chance to learn form some very talented and recognized instructors.
Next month, the Wichita Swing Dance Society will turn 10 years old! Join the weekend-long celebration by coming to Sunflower Swing, our very own Lindy Hop Event. It's going to be a great time, and it's going to be right here in Wichita!
In other news, the Shadow, our home for free dancing two Tuesdays each month, is closing on June 19th. If you know of any other place where we can take our little heard of dancers, please contact Evan or another WSDS Board Member and let us know!
See you next Monday!

Lesson Recap - May 24th
Hey Lindy Bombers!
Last night we were just about EVENLY MATCHED leads to follows, and we had a new couple join the group! What could be better?? (Aside from a video recap.)
Both lessons took us back to some fundamental moves, and focused on the fine technique points involved in each one. Evan stressed that having strong techniques for "simple" moves is what gives is better technique in more advanced ones.
BEGINNER/INTERMEDIATE: We practiced 6ct tuck turns from closed, and leads worked on varying their technique to get the follow to travel a lot or a little. We also spent some time on a 6ct inside turn from open (aka a 6ct pass) and follows worked on reaching a full stretch connection before "unwinding" through the turn. Finally, we worked on at 8ct outside turn and had everyone practice pulsing down into the ground and generally try to be solidly "based."
ADVANCED: We worked on 6ct sugar pushes, having the leads lead a rock step on counts 1-2 to make the move more Lindy- and speed-friendly. After a lot of discussion about using the stretch/compression connection in this simple move, we went on to a new move that applies the same principles + a "momentum steal" by the lead. Don't worry follows, he gives it back, and you get a "whee" moment!
As always, we had an inspirational video to watch between classes. On a personal note, this is one of my favorites!
*swoon*
See you guys TONIGHT at the Shadow. Also, we WILL be having class on Memorial Monday!
~Chelsea
PS We also selected a mascot for the team. See the sidebar of our homepage for a picture!

Lesson Recaps - May 10th and May 17th
May 10th - No practice.
May 17th - OPEN FLOOR NIGHT! Thanks to everyone who came out, it was a productive practice as usual. We also watched this video:
REMINDERS -
May 22 (This Saturday) Brings 2 changes to dance!
Chance 1: Tulsa Road Trip! A small group of Lindy Bombers and other WSDS dancers are heading to Tulsa for the Tulsa equivalent of a Swingin' Sunday. If you're interested, be sure to let Evan know, because if we don't have enough people, we'll postpone the trip.
Chance 2: At Bradley Fair, there will be a live concert on the evening of the 22nd, and the event organizers want us to show up and dance! Dress in vintage or classy clothing, represent the Lindy Bombers, the WSDS, and Swing Dancing in general.
Email Evan if you have questions about either of those.
That's all for now!

Lesson Recap - May 3rd
We had a small but enthusiastic group last night. So small, in fact, that there was no need to hold a separate beginner class. For the first hour, we all worked on three variations of the Texas Tommy. In brief, they were:
- Texas Tommy with a turn for the follow on the last triple step
- Texas Tommy where the lead ducks under his own right arm to turn during the last triple
- Texas Tommy again with the lead turning clockwise under his right arm on 6-8, but only to the point where he's facing away from the follow. He then leads a tuck turn that doesn't lend itself to verbal description. Ask one of the leads who was there tonight for a demonstration.
- The fake-out Texas Tommy
The advanced class was follow-focused (YAY) and we worked on a few moves thieved from this video:
The moves we stole happen at about 1:47 (Frida's 6-8 on her first two swingouts), 3:18 (Same person, same timing), 3:44 (Laura's footwork variation) and 3:55 (Naomi's smooth tuck turn).
That's it for recap, BUT WAIT, I HAVE MORE TO SAY!
1. If you STILL haven't paid for April, please do so ASAP. Every month will get us closer to a video camera and, blessedly, the end of my verbal descriptions of moves.
2. THERE WILL BE NO PRACTICE NEXT WEEK! There's a dance at Riverfest that lots of us will be going to instead, so come practice your moves to some live music and we'll get back together the following week.
Toodles!

Lesson Recaps - April 19th and April 26th
April 19th was OPEN FLOOR NIGHT! We started having these once a month to give everyone a chance to practice what we learn in class. Personally, I'd like to encourage everyone to really USE these nights, because if the group tends to just stand around talking, I assume we'll lose the chance to practice this way. OFNs are a good time to ask one of the teachers to review something with you, ask more experienced dancers to practice with you, and work on drills that you need to improve. There's a lot you can do with the hour, if you try.
On April 26th, we got back to work! Sonya took the beginners and worked on fundamentals. Evan taught the intermediate class a series of moves that I'm too lazy to describe in this post. We connected the moves together in a sort of mini-routine, then ramped up the speed of the music to test our abilities to pull it off. The advanced class worked on different styles of swingouts, comparing what we'll call the "Pedroza" style to the "Max" style of swingout.
We're getting closer to buying that video camera so that I can post videos and be even lazier than I am now. To bring that day a little bit closer, please remember to PAY if you haven't for the month of April. Also PROMOTE our group like crazy, and attend events like Swing on This!
See you next week!
Oh PS, here's the video Evan showed at the beginning of class last night:

April 5th and April 12th Lesson Recaps
Hello Dancers!
Apologies for never posting a lesson recap last week. Still, better late than never!
APRIL 5th:
Beginner/Intermediate: We reviewed three of the basic Lindy Hop Turns (6-count inside, 8-count inside, and 8-count outside). Then we added a jazz step variation onto each:
-6-count inside into the lead doing Susie Q's, leading the follow along beside him as she styles however she wants to
-8-count inside turn into Shorty Georges for both partners
-8-count outside turn into Rusty Dusty's
Advanced: It was the first Monday of the month, and that means one thing: AUDITIONS! Congratulations to Elaine for making it into the Advanced class this month!
April 12th:
Beginner/Intermediate: Evan taught a series of moves with a laid back, smooth theme. When it's done right, this style of dancing is one of my absolute favorites! Here's my best attempt to verbally describe the moves: (Where's that video camera when we need it?)
-Start off in closed and lead an 8-count inside turn. Catch the follow on count 4, "stealing" her momentum to propel yourself through a turn under your own arm during counts 5-8. You should end in open, having passed your follow.
-From open, lead a 6-count "thrust pass" (not as exciting as it sounds). Start your follow moving forward on counts 1 and 2, similar to a swingout or regular 6-count pass. Then, in the neighborhood of count 3, "thrust" with your leading hand as if you're challenging someone to a sword fight, let go of your follow and turn over your own right shoulder. The effect SHOULD be that she turns over her left shoulder in a free spin before you catch in open (follow having passed across the lead) in the neighborhood of counts 5 and 6. Catch her left with your right.
-Still in open, lead a Hollywood Pass. It's just like a vanilla 6-count pass, except you should start perpendicular to your follow, not facing her dead on. You can switch hands as she goes by or not. For our purposes last night, we did not.
-Still in open, lead a circular rock step on 1-2 and bring your follow in, as if for a 6-count free spin on 3. On 4, however, catch her wrist from above with your right hand (it should still be free, we've been leading with our left since the thrust pass). Reverse the direction of her spin with your right hand, and stay with her through counts 5 and 6. End back in closed. Rinse and repeat if desired.
Hopefully that's enough description to get you through the moves if you were IN class to see them.
REMINDERS:
Promote, promote, promote, ESPECIALLY to new follows :-) The more people we have, the more awesome stuff we can do.
Swing on This!!! is coming up in just a couple of weeks! April 24th, for 30$, you can get 4 Lindy Hop classes (choose from beginner or experienced levels) and a night of swing dancing. The fun starts at Old Town Ballroom at high noon. Pay at the door.
Benny Goodman Tribute Concert: Saturday, May 1 at the Century II Performing Arts & Convention Center (225 West Douglas Avenue) there will be a tribute to Benny Goodman starting at 8:00 PM. Some of your Lindy Bomber teammates will be there to get the dancing started, and it should be a great time!
Upcoming Road Trips: If you feel like dancing in a new scene, join your fellow Lindy Bombers and Wichita Swing Dance Society members on one of our upcoming road trips! A few of us will be heading to Kansas City to dance at their weekly shindig on May 1, and later this summer we'd like to make trips to Tulsa and Emporia. Getting out of town and representing the 'ta help bring new dancers to our events, and it's a great way to test your social dancing ability!
The Rhythm is Jumpin' Sort of like Kansas City's version of our Sunflower Swing, TRIJ is a yearly event that pulls dancers from all over the Midwest. Wichita has a history of being well represented, and we don't plan on breaking that tradition! If you're interested in going, talk to Oscar Hampton at Swing on This!!!, he might just sell you a pass at the early-bird rate.
Sunflower Swing: It's coming up quicker than you think! Registration has already jumped from 40$ to 50$, so if you've been procrastinating, it's time to get on that.
Are you even still reading? I think this is the longest LB blog post ever! Thanks for being a trooper. See you next week for OPEN FLOOR NIGHT!

March 29th Lesson Recap
Hello Dancers!
We had a great turnout at practice last night, AND (drum roll please)we were EVENLY matched between leads and follows. WOO-HOO! Here's what went down:
Beginner/Intermediate: We combined forces for the first hour to give everybody a chance to work on some great foundation technique. Triple-step drills and 6 count pass vs. swingout drills gave us all a chance to work on the things that make our Lindy Hop work. Evan also introduced a couple of moves: the crash, which many of us had seen before, and what I'll call the "double crash," which was brand new.
Advanced: A theme of "arm catches" drove the advanced lesson, including several variations on the basic 6 count move that preps the lead to catch the follow by the back of her arm. The first variation was a free spin ending in closed, then a free spin ending in open, and then a third one where the arm catch is merely the prep for a second and THIRD arm catch which transition nicely into Collegiate Shag, Charleston, or back into Lindy Hop.
Videos from this week feature the instructors you can expect to see at Swing on This, the Lindy Hop workshop at Old Town Ballroom on April 24th:
Oscar Hampton:
And Evan Borst: (conveniently located behind the dancers in the foreground)
We also got a sneak preview of the instructors we'll have at Sunflower Swing, Kim Clever and David Frutos:
ONE MORE THING: It's the end of March. If you haven't paid Evan for this month, PLEASE do so! And be ready to pay for April next week. OH and that reminds me, auditions for the Advanced group are next week at 8:30!
Bye for now!

March 22nd Lesson Recap
Hey everyone! Here's a quick recap of our classes last night:
Beginner - Austin was nice enough to teach, and worked on basics and fundamentals. (You'll notice this is pretty much the same for every week)
Intermediate - Evan taught Jig Walks, a Promenade ("pecks" styling optional), and a footwork/connection variation for counts 1&2 of a swingout.
Advanced - "Musicality to Save Your A--", or how to use your musicality as a tool to make fast dancing smoother, easier, and better-looking.
Wouldn't it be great if we could post actual video recaps each week? It sure would! Evan and I have been toying with the idea of buying the group a little camera for just such a purpose, but you know what we would need in order to buy the camera? Money in the bank. So dancers, keep recruiting! We had more leads than follows AGAIN last night, so this is the perfect opportunity for you guys to talk your lady friends into coming. With a few more members and a successful event or two, we might just go beyond breaking even each month :-)
Hope to see you all at The Shadow tonight for some dancing in about. . . SEVEN MINUTES! (Sprinting out the door!)

Lindyfest 2010
Hello Lindy Bombers!
I'm proud to say that the Wichita dance scene was very well represented at Lindyfest 2010 in Houston! A handful of our very own Lindy Bombers made the 10-hr drive to and from the event, including Lance, Dave, Cassandra, Peter, Elaine, Ryan, Adam, Andy, Austin, Ashley, Phil, and myself. Not too shabby! I think I can speak for all of us when I say the weekend was AWESOME! If you've never been to a big event like Lindyfest, allow me to give you an idea of how it goes down:
You arrive in the destination city on Thursday or Friday evening, just in time for a welcome dance. Get checked into your hotel or situated with your hosting local dancers, and try to rest up before an eventful weekend!
For the next 2 or 3 days, you get up at 9:00 or so and attend anywhere from 4 to 8 hours of dance classes, taught by some of the best dancers in the world. There are usually 2 or more "tracks" of classes, depending on your experience and skill level. So, if you're a newer dancer, you can take beginner classes, and if you're more experienced, you might move up to intermediate or advanced.
Every night there's another dance, and each one may include a live band, performances, and dance competitions.
All the while, you have a golden opportunity to dance with OUT OF TOWN dancers! This is the true test of your ability to socially lead/follow on the dance floor. It's also a great way to pick up new moves and techniques.
Anyway, the classes and dances at Lindyfest were A-MAZING! Expect to see some pilfered moves and drills over the next couple of months on Sunday and Monday nights :-)
Just in case you don't know, there are two events coming up right here in Wichita where you can get a taste of what these dance workshops are like:
Swing on This: April 24th, at Old Town Ballroom. Instructors Evan Borst and Oscar Hampton will each be teaching 4 classes Saturday afternoon, and we'll have a dance for everyone in the evening! It's a one-day event, and the cost (including classes and the dance) is just 30$. For details, click here
Sunflower Swing: July 16th-18th, The Wichita Swing Dance Society is turning 10, and we're celebrating in style with a weekend-long conference! We'll have a handful of VERY talented instructors from all over the country, classes to suit any skill level, and swingin' dances all three nights! Cost for the WHOLE WEEKEND is only 40$ for the first 25 registrants (55$ if you're not a WSDS member), and after that the price starts to go up! By the time July rolls around, it'll be 70$ (85$ non-member), so get registered ASAP if you want to come! Learn more here.
I hope to see ALL of you at one or both of these local events, and hopefully at some out of town events also!

3/15 Preview
Hey gang, it's open floor night tonight! Many will be coming back from Houston, but for everyone else it's a great chance to get some practice in.
Remember, this is a great chance to work with the other dancers on whatever ails you:
Pick up a new move
Adjust some technique to help the dance feel better
Add a styling or two
Up your speed rating a bit
Whatever you want, people will be there, including me. Hopefully you'll be there too......

Lesson Recap
Hey Lindy Bombers!
Last night Sonya was nice enough to teach the beginner class (and we have a new beginner! Yay for Jill!) while Austin taught intermediate. During the intermediate hour, we spent some quality time on triple step drills and then learned a few variations of the Texas Tommy. We also learned a nifty footwork variation for our swingouts.
Evan taught the advanced class and focused on making dance more than just a string of moves. Working with a variety of music, we all worked on bringing more personality and expression to our dancing, instead of relying on complex technical patterns.
Videos we watched today:
Next week is a GREAT WEEK to come to class, particularly for beginners. A lot of the regulars will be out of town for Lindyfest in Houston, so anyone who DOES come will have plenty of attention from the instructors.
See you all on the dance floor!

Class Notes from 2/22/2010
Hello Dancers!
Thanks to all of you who came out to practice last night! In case you missed it (or in case you want to review), here's what went down!
- Beginner and Intermediate classes were combined due to a shortage of both instructors and students. From 7:30-8:30, Chelsea and Phil taught a lesson especially for follows, focusing on how to tune into your lead and make the most of every opportunity to style and play.
- For the Advanced hour, Megan tagged in to teach an impromptu lesson on solo jazz moves including the Roger Rabbit, Apple Jacks, and scissor kicks. For the last half hour or so, we had open dancing.
This week was a little smash-bang, because Evan was home sick. So, thanks to everyone who made it out for being flexible and going with the flow!
Don't miss SOUL NIGHT this Sunday at Harry Reese's dance studio! It's gonna be awesome!

January Workshop Video Posted!
Check out the Videos page for a new installment! Evan and I did a quick demo of MOST of the material we covered in the last workshop. There's a little Balboa and a little Collegiate Shag. . . something for everyone!
If you were at the workshop, you'll notice we didn't fit QUITE everything into this video. A) That's why it's worth it to SHOW UP TO THE WORKSHOP and B) It's not that long of a song; we did what we could. :-)
Happy viewing!

Great Workshop this Weekend!
THANKS to everyone who came to our workshop yesterday, it was a great time! Our Balboa class seemed to broaden everyone's move vocabulary, and the Shag classes (the FIRST WE'VE EVER DONE) were a blast. We'll be positing a video demonstration of all the material we covered as soon as such a video is created :-)
We had about 15 people attend, which was a nice-sized crowd. Keep your eyes on the Blog and the Calendar for information about or next workshop. . . hopefully we'll have all the same students and more!
-Chelsea
PS - I just uploaded a the video from our LAST workshop (Challenging Charleston, Mind Blowing Moves, and Hustle and Flow) to the videos page. It's the oldest video there, so you'll have to scroll all the way to the bottom, but check it out if you've forgotten what we covered back in November!
